18 Year Old, Doctor Says Growing Pains Not Tendonitis

by Janice

So about four or five years ago I'm at the doctors complaining about this pain in my wrist. There's also cracking and clicking.

He says I'm young, I'll grow out of it. I haven't and it's definitely worsened as well as begun, albiet not as much, in my other wrist.

I've had problems with tendinitis before, one tendon is permanently screwed up in some way so that if I move my arm a certain way, in which I can do perfectly fine with my other arm, a small tearing sensation ensues in a hard to locate spot.

I still don't know if what I have in my wrist is, in fact, tendonitis. The pain occurs on the backside of my wrist in that little dip directly across/below my middle finger. There's also cracking and such, so it might be arthritis, but I don't know, I've never had a doctor take my worry seriously.

It's less numb and more excruciating pain, which usually helps with pressure from a wrap, but only so much and with a lot so I can't wear it long without cutting circulation. But there is numbness. The very same thing on my other wrist except for the location which is on the front side directly across/below the pinky in the dip below the bone there. It's all very painful.

Maybe if you can offer some advice I can just straight up say what to look for and maybe my doctor won't try and brush it of as growing pains, because I'm now 18 and know for a fact growing shouldn't be this painful.

Hi Janice.

If you say 'tearing sensation' to a doctor and they shrug it off as growing pains, that's a definite sign that you should RUN away from that doctor.

1. The cracking and popping is either due to being too loose, or too tight.

Would you say the muscles/joints in your forearm/hand/fingers are loose, or tight?

2. Say more about the excruciating pain that goes away when you tightly wrap. The more detail, the better.

3. Say more about that tearing sensation. Where exactly, what movement exactly, etc. A tearing sensation is NOT normal.
